Sevenoaks Lullington Roman Lullingstone Sevenoaks Weald Downs Ightham Kent UK

Sevenoaks lost six of its famous ancient seven oak trees during the great storm of October 1987. Set in the heart of the North Downs, Sevenoaks has a most attractive town centre with a fine selection of chic cafes, restaurants, specialist shops including books and antiques and plenty of alfresco dining in the summer months. The Kino Sevenoaks cinema and theatre is the arts centre hub in the town offering a choice of art and mainstream cinema, alongside theatre, comedy and music shows. South Eastern Railways operate direct links from Sevenoaks into central London. The town serves as an excellent central base from which to explore not just nearby famous stately homes Knole and Chartwell, but also the sublime countryside of the Kent Weald and Downs. To the north of Sevenoaks Lullingstone Castle & World Garden, Lullingstone Roman Villa and Lullingstone Park (with visitor centre) are more attractions within easy reach. A little local history museum sits within the Sevenoaks library.With a distinctive village feel, Sevenoaks' main High Street is a bustle of charming shops, atmospheric inns and a fine selection of historic 16th, 17th and 18th century buildings. Look out for the historic Chequers Inn plus the Red House which was once the home of Jane Auten's uncle. Jane Austen often visited her uncle in the town. Set within the stunning North Downs countryside, Sevenoaks is a town dating back to the Saxon period. With its choice of fine pubs and restaurants plus speciality shops including antiques, art and books, Sevenoaks makes a superb base for exploring numerous attractions within easy reach including famous Knole with its 1000 acre deer park and nearby Chartwell, Hever and Penshurst. A lively market takes place in Sevenoaks every Saturday on the High Street.

Lullingstone Castle, Visitor Centre & Roman Villa

North of Sevenoaks, easily accessed off the M25, sits the Lullingstone complex of attractions including Lullingstone Castle and gardens, Lullingstone Roman Villa and Lullingstone Park Visitor Centre and surrounding Shoreham Woods, Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Lullingstone Castle, essentially a manor house and gatehouse set within 120 acres, 15 acres of which is a lake, dates from 1497. Famous frequent visitors included Henry VIII and Queen Anne. Lullingstone Castle's award winning World Garden, created by Tom Hart Dyke pulls in the crowds. Hart Dyke and friend were kidnapped whilst in the Panamanian Jungle in 2000. Lullingstone Park Visitor Centre in the heart of 460 acres of glorious Kent Downs countryside is where to head to find out more about the history of Lullingstone Park which was once a medieval deer park. Pick up leaflets for trails and walks here, plus information on nearby ancient woodland Shoreham Woods.

Supervised by English Heritage, Lullingstone Roman Villa has thrown up some fascinating Roman finds including floor and wall Roman mosaics, Roman ceramics and the remains of a Roman Villa built around c.AD 75. The 4th century bath site is still visible and the exhibit here includes various skeletal remains found on the complex. Ightham Mote 14th Century Manor House

Just to the east of Sevenoaks and Knole sits one of the National Trust's real gems - Ightham Mote. The manor house is an extremely rare surviving modated medieval manor house which dates from the early 14th century. The Trust has recently completed the mammoth restoration project which began in 1988 on this exquisite Grade I listed property. The manor house is a fine study in architectural history, and saw numerous tweeks through the years by various owners including additional features the Great Hall, Crypt and Tudor Chape with its hand-painted ceiling. A favourite with many visitors is the Grade I listed dog kennel situated in the cobbled courtyard. Gardens, water features and of course the mote surround the property.
