Herne Bay pulls on its traditional Victorian seaside resort roots well with a central seafront bandstand, a centre for events and the tourist information office. The town is at its liveliest during August and the annual Herne Bay Festival running over 9 days which includes the popular parade. Boat trips are a particular highlight, running regularly from the Herne Bay coast taking you on birdwatching and seal watching tours, with opportunities for jet ski and swimming with seals.
Herne Bay's main museum and gallery takes a good look at the town's seaside resort history dating back to the Victorian period. Historic artefacts on display here are from Reculver's Roman fort and Saxon Church which once stood to the east of Herne Bay. Herne Bay's huge selection of pubs, many of which are great live music venues, give the town an edge. Live music in the pubs definitely has a rock edge here in Herne Bay. Some of the best coastal walking in Kent is on the menu on the Herne Bay stretch of coast, both along Herne Bay's long and flat level promenade and east along the Reculver cliffs.

Herne Bay Festival & Activities in Herne Bay
The Herne Bay Festival takes place annually in Mid-August, offering a variety of events especially good for families. The focus is firmly on the seaside, and a number of free beach events take place, including the Sandcastle Building Tournament and various events on the pier and Herne Bay's gloriously long and garden edged promenade.
Herne Bay's live music scene is pretty good - a number of Herne Bay pubs play host to live music events. More live music usually goes on around the Clocktower Plaza, Pier and Bandstand.

Herne Bay Boat Trips Seal Watching Beaches Watersports
Scenic wildlife boat trips from Herne Bay have rather a long history. Tourist trips were popular from this seaside resort in the early 1900s. They're thriving again to popular demand, particularly for birdwatching and seal watching, as well as swimming with seals especially around the 5 mile long Barrow Sands, a favourite spot for the Common and Grey seals during season.
Two boat operators run regular boat trips from Herne Bay - Wildlife Sailing and Bay Blast. Checkout their webguides linked right for details and extensive photography.
Wildlife Sailing Herne Bay. Tel. 01227 366712, or email via the website. Bayblast Sailing, Tel. 01227 373372, or email via the weblink.
Like Whitstable, Herne Bay's beaches are pebbly, however the beachfront promenade lined with beautiful gardens, the bandstand and Herne Bay's lively pier give it a different more family seaside resort feel compared to Whitstable.
Herne Bay Museum & Art Gallery, Kavanagh Cinema Herne Bay
For lovers of British seaside resort history, Herne Bay's Museum and Art Gallery is a must, situated just off the seafront east of the Clock Tower. Take a journey through the history of this popular Victorian seaside resort.
All Herne Bay's historic seaside architecture is given due attention including the Clock Tower (one of Britain's tallest), the pretty pier and beach promenade. Also here are important finds, both Saxon and Roman, from the nearby Reculver site east of Herne Bay, plus there's an interesting novelty exhibit with example prototype of the Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb from World War II. This was the bomb used during the Dambusters campaign, and prior to that tested in the Reculver area. The art gallery on-site displays the work of local artists, and numerous events run through the year, especially events for children.
