Ashford Museums & Willesborough Smock Windmill

Ashford may well be Kent's hub for access across the Channel via Eurostar fast train service from Ashford International, however the town retains its old market roots. The relatively small and friendly centre, with a number of treasured historic buildings including central 15th century St Mary's Parish and the 17th century grammar school, feels like an old Kent market town. Pick up an Ashford Historic Trail leaflet from Ashford Tourist Information Office adjacent to the town's main history museum and historic church and churchyard.

Ashford's Borough Museum has some fascinating material, including the Barns collection of photographs of the area taken in the 1880s and 1890s, plenty on the history of the grammar school (the building which houses the museum) and of particular interest exhibits on the history of Ashford and the railways. This central Kent town has long had links with the railways, as well as serving as frontline defense town during World War I and II.

Ashford Borough Museum, The Churchyard, Ashford, Kent TN23 1QG. Tel. 01233 631511. Open from 2 April - 31 October 2007, Monday to Saturday, 10am - 1pm.

Ashford Kent Stately Homes - Godinton House & Gardens

Considered one of Kent's best stately homes, and a fine example of exterior Jacobean architecture, Godinton House & Gardens is conveniently just off junction 9 of the M20. The remodelled and elaborate Georgian styled dining room dates from 1760. The same family - the Totes, have been in residence over the centuries, adding styles through generations. A knowledgeable guide takes you round, pointing out various notable artefacts includings artwork by Reynolds, Chippendale furniture and Worcester ceramic pieces.
