Canterbury City Centre Tourist Information
Canterbury is what you'd call a friendly city break. Virginia Woolf thought there was 'no lovelier place in the world than Canterbury'. It's small compared to the likes of Edinburgh, but in many ways has much in common with it.
Canterbury's annual October Arts Festival is fast catching upto the high standard of Edinburgh's festival. Another big Canterbury Festival is the Stour Music Festival held annually in high Summer, usually June. Canterbury's many attractions crammed within its medieval city walls are all, like Edinburgh's, within easy walking distance of each other. Some exciting High Speed rail developments are afoot within Kent currently, and journey times from Canterbury West into Central London St Pancras take just over 1 hour!
The city's small size is a blessing, as Canterbury has low level traffic and your two feet or cycle hire are all you need to take in what the city has to offer. Canterbury is English history to the core, and ancient English history at that.
The explosion of Christianity in Britain can be traced here to Canterbury with the arrival of St Augustine in 597AD. With the sublime North Downs to the south of Canterbury, and the stunning ancient woodlands of the Blean and on the coast pretty seaside meccas Whitstable (famous for oysters) and Herne Bay, Canterbury makes for an excellent base from which to explore the East Kent region.

Canterbury's acclaim as a centre for art is no accident, The city's Christ Church Arts College is one of the best, and work by students is often on display in the city's galleries. Famous Canterbury artistic sons include the artist Thomas Sidney Cooper, famous for his pastoral and cattle scenes and one of Shakespeare's key influencers - Christopher Marlowe.

Canterbury Travel & Accommodation
Access into Canterbury couldn't be easier, whether by road, rail, coach and bus and ferry crossing. Main motorways filter conveniently into Canterbury and Kent, avoiding central London via the M25/M2. Canterbury has two railway stations, Canterbury East and West, with direct rail links from London Victoria as well as up from Dover Priory. If you're coming across from Europe via the Eurostar Channel Tunnel to Ashford International (see Eurostar weblink right for timetables), ongoing train connections from Ashford to Canterbury are frequent. Check the South Eastern Rail weblink right for details.
London's choice of airports including Luton, Stanstead, Heathrow and Gatwick, are less than a 2 hour drive from Canterbury. By rail hop on the London Underground from Heathrow to London Victoria then direct onwards by rail to Canterbury. Coach and bus services in Kent are as good as the train service. Stagecoach are the main provider within the East Kent region (see Stagecoach Bus webguide right). Stagecoach covers the East Kent region well with regular bus services between major Kent tourist hotspots including Canterbury, Faversham, Ashford, Whitstable and Herne Bay and Dover. Excellent park and ride services also operate from the outskirts of Canterbury. See the Canterbury Tourist webguide right for details.
As well as making for an exciting historic and arts centre holiday base, Canterbury is well placed within East Kent for branching out north to the glorious East Kent coast and hotspot seaside resorts such as Whitstable and Herne Bay. Both are within easy reach for daytrips as is the Isle of Thanet interior and more seaside hotspots such as Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. The North Downs and North Downs Way (Pilgrims Way) are also within easy reach to the south of Canterbury. Canterbury's city centre choice of accommodation, particularly Canterbury hotels and bed and breakfasts, is huge catering for demand in this popular English city. Choose from numerous B&Bs and hotels, from moderate to luxury, all within easy walking distance from Canterbury Cathedral, the Canterbury Tales and other central Canterbury attractions.
